It’s common to feel unsure or worried about what to expect from a counselling session. Our counsellors address some common questions about counselling and therapy.
How does counselling help?
Talking with a certified counsellor can help a person deal with thoughts, behaviours, stressors, goals, past experiences and other areas that can promote recovery. Therapy often offers an emotional release and a feeling of truly being heard, understood and supported.
Therapy can help one to:
- better manage and resolve emotional & mental health issues
- eliminate confusions
- acquire effective communication & thinking skills
- improve self-esteem and motivation
- feel stronger in the face of challenges
- heal pains from the past
- improve coping skills
- overcome difficult emotional issues
What happens during a therapy session?
On the first therapy session, the client will be informed about the process of therapy. Each session lasts 50 minutes, with 10 minutes to wind down.
During each session, counsellors ask questions and attempt to find out the problems a client is facing. Working through these problems might be a difficult journey for the client before he/she is able to gain control and utilize the new coping skills.
Using different techniques of therapy, like CBT, ACT, and so on, the counsellor helps clients gain new perspectives over the sessions.
